Social Media Tips: 7 Social Etiquette Tips

December 4th, 2009 Tania Williams View Comments

When it comes to social media tips and social etiquette I’ve been coming to grips with the do’s and don’t s of social networking on social network sites like Facebook and BetterNetworker.

Here’s a cool video with excellent social media tips-by Pery Belcher that’ll help you “get it”

Social MediaTips

There’s a fine line between attractive content and unattractive content.

Attractive content gets more reads and more leads to your lead capture pages.

Spamming is a waste of time and destroys your reputation. It’s often not clear exactly what unattractive content or spam is, so take the time to read these social media tips  and you’ll have a much better idea.

Do it right and social networking sites can help your business explode by exponentially increasing traffic to your sites.

Social Media Tips- learn the rules at the social networking sites

There’s a grey area and different rules and social etiquette for each social networking site you use. You definateley want to learn the rules and apply them.

For example at a social networking site like Hub Pages, you cannot link to more than two of the same URL’s.

That means you cannot create links that point your reader to the same URL more than twice in the same article.

But beyond the rules, there’s a subjective aspect to social etiquette that takes a little while to “get”.

You really want to take the time to get a feel for the social climate at the networks you are using, because besides risking offending people (or worse, having your account closed down), your reputation is at stake.

And online, your reputation is all you have!

At the end of the day, you want your social media marketing efforts to be effective.

Using the social sites and marketing arena is a powerful way to to propel your business to new heights.

All the networking you do and the content you post takes time and effort.

It makes sense to have it working for you in the right way.

Here are another 7 social media tips I’ve picked up along the way that helped me.

Bear them in mind while going about your internet marketing and watch your audience gather and grow- rather than diminish and fade.

Social Media Tips for Marketing at Social Networking Sites

1. Never go to someone’s page and purposefully try to grab their traffic (placing links or inserting links when you place comments)….if you comment, don’t say anything about your product.

It’s like going to someone’s house and taking their items. Build your own house and provide your visitors with training. For example on Facebook: Create the groups and run them yourself—don’t spam other people’s groups!

2. Don’t send your system/opportunity message to a stranger (someone you don’t know).

First let them join your group. Or they can opt in to your list.

If they become your friend, just develop a relationship first and then invite them to join your group/opt in to your list.

Ask before you invite people to events on Facebook. A note requesting if they would like an invitation goes a long way and also helps build a relationship.

(This is a recently acquired piece of informaton for me!)

3. Build relationships and act like a human at social media network sites.

Especially as everyone is catching on to these trends. These sites are first and foremost social networking sites. Don’t send people messages about your business if you haven’t spoken to them or built up a relationship first.

Act like you would if you go to a party.

You wouldn’t enter a room full of people and start pitching your system or business to people at the party.

You would become aquainted first and get into a conversation.

Perhaps as time goes on, someone might ask you more about yourself and what you do.

If there’s a genuine interest that develops and this person feels you have something to teach them or a beneficial collaboration to be made, they will initiate a connection asking for a business relationship.

At this point, it is appropriate to tell them what you can offer.

The same goes at the social networking sites.

Never bring up your business unless someone asks for it.

Be real.

You can put up content and in this way put yourself in the path of people who are searching for what you have to offer.

So you let people watch you and then if they ask you, you can send info/links about your business.

4. Remember, it takes time to develop your web presence.

Be patient.

Outshine the rest (there are lots of people doing it so you need to make sure your stuff stands out above the others).

You need an entire web presence going on.

People can be on your list for months- and when they are ready, they will contact you.

Don’t stop- people need consistency.

They want to join someone who’s in for the long run and who knows what they are doing.

Keep expanding your presence (people are watching you)- and learn to use different social networking sites and mediums- so you can gradually expand.

Become an authority (over 5 or 6 months)-it takes time.

The more you have out there, the better.

Build your web presence and stick with it. Those determined to succeed step by step will make it.

5. Learn how to stay ahead of the curve on these social networking sites.

When you are on these social sites, be aware of the trends.

For example MySpace and YouTube at first, 6 months ago, were huge.

But recently MySpace started dying down – and now its FaceBook thats hot.

YouTube is not pulling like it was before (there are too many people to weed out- and it has become over saturated).

Video is important- but it can be used differently.

It must be used to show who you are and it gives a personal touch.

But you do need other mediums and profiles at other sites!

You need to stay ahead of the masses.

BetterNetworker,Friendfeed, StumbleUpon and especiallyTwitter are also doing well right now.

6. On Facebook, don’t tag people just so that their lists will see you.

You are not adding value to their content or adding to them as people by simply doing this.

Someone tagged me on a page they posted at Facebook and it has nothing to do with me.

I suspect they did it because I have a lare group of friends and they wanted the exposure.

It irritated me immensely and does not endear me to the tagger at all.

Don’t just pitch without serving the community first.

7. At Betternetworker, don’t pitch anything in your welcome message to a newcomer. Make sure you read their profile first, click on their links to get to know them and their interests.

Then, if you want to make a connection, send a personalised note showing you have a little background on them. Remember, don’t just make friends with everyone.

If you feel you have a genuine desire to initiate a relationship thats fine.

But then follow through and really connect and get to know them, giving value all along.

Remember, if the community at social networking sites trusts you they’ll check out your sites and read your content.

On the web, your reputation is all you have.

Serve your colleagues first- respect and honour them and your reputation will grow positively.

So will your business.

guruMLM Online Training Tips: 6 Guru Secrets Exposed

This post will teach you the 5 steps the GURUs take to get massive leads and traffic to their sites.

You want to really “get” this so that you too can get thousands of visits to your site, make sales and generate a tribe of followers that you be able to influence with your useful recommendations.  (= SALES!!)

Not following what the most successful online marketers do will keep you isolated, ignorant and with no power in this online world.

You could carry on for years fooling yourself into thinking you’ve got an online business, and as your leads dwindle and your bank balance drops deeper into debt (and your self image plummets), you’ll be feeling sorry for your self for yet another week, month or even year.

Follow the leaders and be smart. Have a keen eye and watch what they do. Then act on it and keep track of your business.

MLM Online Training Tips:Here’s what the gurus do:

Guru Secrets to get people to their sites:

1. They use Pay Per Click – This is not so easy and it costs money.

But it is effective- you can literally generate leads withing 15 minutes of going live.

Do yourself a favour and get Perry Marshall’s Definitive Guide to Google Adwords. Save yourself the pain of losing money with an ineffective Adwords Campaign.

2. Social Media Marketing- with a twist (Face Book, Twitter, YouTube) -

These are all booming right now, but it takes a while to build a following and you need loads of followers before you’ll see results.

But here’s the twist you probably don’t know:

Most guru’s dont have time to waste on social networking sites, but get the benefit of increased following, social buzz, google rankings , traffic leads and sales.

Do you want that too?

(Who doesn’t right!!)

Here’s the guru solution:

If you want an instant community of followers who virally spread your content out throughout the social networks, go here and check out the Syndication Revelation Report. (Synnd)

Synnd takes away the time consuming and manual tasks of building two-way relationships and extending your tribe of followers.

Your stuff is spread automatically (it goes viral) and Google starts ranking you higher due to the social buzz and the 1000’s of references that are being made to your keywords in your blog posts.

Its like putting your social bookmarking efforts on steroids!

Join Synnd here.  (All the guru’s have)

3. Search Engine Optimisation

SEO

This is also great and very important- but it does take a while and you need to be consistent and be posting on a daily basis.

Here’s a good SEO strategy:

Do this consistently day in and day out and it’ll grow your traffic (not an immediate result)

For Traffic you can control (like ads on people’s email lists, JV’s, PPC, banner traffic, affiliate traffic)- send

them to a squeeze page, then a sales page and start monetizing.

For Traffic you don’t control, send them to blog first (traffic from social sites, SEO, organic traffic)

Your BLOG is your Home page- its your authority site.

Its good PR to send people to your blog first before you send them to a squeeze page.

Your Blog has your pics, your bio + links to your products on the side.

It’s like inviting someone to your home and letting them get to know you.

(Remember people buy from people they know, like and trust)

Your Goal is to make it a site where there’s lots of content growing and getting bigger and bigger on a daily basis.

If you post a new blog post, you create another page.

If you do it daily, then after a year you have 365 pages!

And each page is like a tenticle bringing people in to your site.

Your Blog gets indexed by Google. (Yippee!)

You should make the top one third of your blog similar to a squeeze page- it has an opt in form.

Underneath that is your blog post and comments etc.

Your goal is to create as many different pages as possible all based on different but related keywords.

E.g if you’re selling business training online- you’d use Google’s free keyword tool, and find the keywords you’re gonna focus on.

e.g Top Internet Businesses

This will give you other suggestions (related keywords) e.g home based businesses

It will give you all the keywords people are searching on as well as how many searches are being done on that word monthly

You then do a blog post on a certain chosen keyword.

On page SEO

1. You can do a video about home based businesses (use your flip camera)- cut a video based around the keyword.

2. Get a stay at home mom to summarize what you said, using those key words, (A 5 min video should be able to be summarized into a 300-500 word essay. (Pay around $5/video).

It’s not a transcript- more like a summary.(The author needs to “get the concept” and then and write about it).

3. Take the video and the article and post it on your blog.

Make sure you are Keyword rich. (Keywords in the title and tages as well as sprinkled throughout the article)

Remember you must have a CTA= call to action, at the bottom of the page.

It can be as simple as “I have a free video that reveals my number one secret on…(whatever your offer is)….. get it here”

Use Off Page  SEO

Off page/ off site  SEO is everything else you’re doing that points back to your site/blog.

You can understand it like a poularity contest.

The more back links you have, the higher your Google Ranking.

Check out the tips on doing online business optimization and getting this aspect of your business right here.

4. Get JV’s and Affiliates-

JV

These are the best ones!!

And the fastest.

The Gurus know that by far the easiest and quickest way or propelling a business forward, is by using Affiliate marketing and JV’s.

But Know How to Approach Potential JV Partners…..

BE careful how you approach your JV partners.

Don’t just email them and ask them to JV with you right off the bat.

Developing a relationship is like going on a date with a girl- the worst thing to do (if you think she looks hot)-
is to ask her to marry you on a first date!

Its Creepy!

It’s the same with a JV offer.

This is how NOT to do it:

“Hey, we have a great product and it’ll change your customer’s life and I’ll give you 50% and we’ll
make a ton of money!”

Its not a good way!

Top Internet Businesses do it the right way:

They build a relationship first.

Money is not the hook.

People will deal with you cause they like you!

How do you achieve this?

Like when you go on a date – compliment them first!

Ask them questions about themselves (let them talk about themselves).

Let them feel you care. Make them feel special.

Don’t go and ask them to promote your product!

Take a while to build a relationship, send a pizza from pizza hut (with your name and phone number on it and a note to “call me”)

Find those who have a target market similar to yours and/or products similar to yours- and become friends.

Get their phone number and call them (don’t use email- perhaps only use email to get their phone number).

Send them a gift. Grab their attention (they get 100’s of emails a day)!

Invite them to do an interview or to come to your seminar as a guest.

Go to seminars and invite the dude to lunch and ask him about what he’s doing.

Get his ear.

He’ll remember you and know who you are.

Show interest in their project.

Tell them what a cool product they have. Make sure you buy their product and give them a testimonial on how it helped you.

Get on their calls, compliment them and don’t ask them directly to partner with you.

A good way (ninja trick) is to say “your product is really cool”, my customers are similar to yours but they- really need a product like this,

Let me interview you for my customers, (I cant really pay you) but chances are my customers may come back and buy from you.”

Note: Just ask for one thing (i.e. the interview to give to your members)- and build your potential JV Partner up.

Then, take the interview and use it as a front end (free +shipping)- product.

Then go back to the person and say “I created a FE product out of our interview and its doing really well.

Then ask them if he/she thinks his/her customers would benefit from it as well?

Use his/her pic and position him/her as the Guru.

They’ll love it.

He/she then promotes it to their customers and those customers will get back ended into your programme (OTO/continuity programme)- and pay him commissions. (He has just become an affiliate!)

His name is being promoted (not yours), but you’re still making the money.

Send cards, brownies and gifts to affiliates.

Give as much value as possible to potential JV partners. (You can do that also by being an affiliate of theirs, once you have a list.)

Help them out at seminars.(Pack out the chairs!!)

Also, you can become a good case study of potential JV partners)- it’s a really cool thing because the more successful you are, the more successful they are.

Often you cant get in to the big shots (too difficult and clicky)- so start with your peers and grow with

them.

Build a solid network of colleagues that you regularly connect with.

Learn and teach each other.

Build your own internal network together as you grow your lists together.

Find people on your level who are creating their stuff and grow with them.

Here’s another tip relating to JV Partners and Affiliates:

Find the cool guy- the top Guru.

If one cool Guru thinks you’re cool, you’re in.

Find the one cool big shot (get them to think you’re cool- like you can become their case study)

They can introduce you to others- ask them “who do you think will benefit from my product.”

Get the cool people to be part of your launch- and then leverage their name (get other affiliates to promote your site)

Here’s yet another way you can find affiliates and JV partners:

Make a list of 100 top prospects – your dream team of top JV partners (customers, affiliates).

Look in Click Bank, Pay Dot Com and see who the top affiliates are in your niche and call them, send them gifts and get through the gatekeeper.

BE PERSISTENT. Send a gift in the mail (for a year- every month!)

Twitter and Facebook- these are great ways to get hold of the big gurus.

Twitter and Face Book are cool.

Face Book is nice cause you can upload and send a video.

That way they’ll get to remember you.

You can get their address and send a gift.

(Don’t try communicate via email. Use Twitter).

Remember- One good JV can change your life!

Keep your relationships good.

If they say “yes”, and then for some reason they don’t actually do the promotion for you, don’t freak out.

Keep the relationship positive and sweet- because the next time they might actually do it.

This way you keep your doors open.

Pay your affiliates well!.

Give them 50% of the continuity, or 50% of the One Time Offer (OTO), or $20 per free thing they give away (only if you know your numbers!)

5 .All The Gurus  Get Outsourcing.

outsourcing

Go to Scriptlance or Elance and post your job on the list.

You’ll get 100’s of bids.

You can use Outsourcing to:

Distribute your video using video submission software like Tubemogul (free) and/or Traffic

Geyser and submit it to 80 different video sites (each one allows you to have a link back to your site).

This is cool because when they type the keyword in at for example Youtube, your video comes up- but it

also gives back links to your blog post.

Use different video services- rotate them so you don’t leave footprints.

Traffic Geyser reformats your video 4 different times
(10videos x 80 video sites = 800 backlinks x 4 reformatted = 3200 links back to your site!!)

PER WEEK!

5. Now take the text and submit (or get your outsouce partners) to submit via different article
submission software programmes

(wih links pointing back to that page)

Remember you will also get organic traffic from the article directory sites
themselves when surfers type in the keywords relating to your article.

The Links at the bottom of the article links back to your site.

The Text used to link back is NB.

The Keyword you are optimising for at your blog post,
must be the anchor text used in your article to link back (Its the Blue underlined link)

6. Also submit to Hub Pages and Squidoo/ Weebly. As well as Ezine articles.

Hope you enjoyed that!
